Common Recycling Myths That You Need To Ignore

Common Recycling Myths That You Need To Ignore

As the years have gone by, recycling has gone from being something of a hobby that was completed by the minority of individuals, to a mandated practice that can have incredible results on the way in which we live our lives. Unfortunately, there are a number of ill-informed rumours in circulation that cause people to second-guess whether or not they should join the recycling community. Here at Smiths Recycling, we take great pride in being well-versed in this department; as such, allow us to offer some clarity on the situation.

Separation Is A Must’

When you first move in to a new building, you may be told by neighbours or fellow residents that in order for the recycling to be effective, you need to spend time separating various different materials. It is true that in certain parts of the country, this is true; however, it is certainly not the case for the majority of the UK. There is nothing wrong with placing waste-paper products into the same bin as a plastic pot – once it reaches the dedicated plant, they will be sifted into the relevant piles, and the process will continue as-planned.

Once Is The Limit’

In the past, due to the standard of recycling equipment that was available, materials were usually only able to be recycled once. After that, they were rendered redundant, and would have to be disposed of in the same fashion as other non-recyclable products. Thankfully, technology has come a long way since then and, with the exception of single-use plastics, the vast majority of recyclable materials can be re-used time-and-time again. This is part of the solution to lowering global emissions, and becoming more-sustainable as a population.

Recycled Products Are Worse-Quality’

Arguably one of the most-damaging myths that is routinely circulated in regards to products that have been constructed from recycled materials is that, from a quality standpoint, they are inferior – this could not be further from the truth. Manufacturers in the current day-and-age possess state-of-the-art equipment that allows them to extract the necessary elements from waste products, and subsequently implement them into brand-new units with ease. If you took a moment to consider the hit that business’ reputations would take if they allowed their creations to be sub-par in quality due to the presence of recycled elements, it would not take you long to realise that it is impossible for this to be the case.

Why Should You Recycle?

Now that we have dispelled some of the lingering misconceptions that are attributed to recycling, it is important that we highlight some of the benefits that can be enjoyed from this type of activity. By far-and-away the most important thing to consider is that you can play your part in halting the harvesting of the world’s natural resources. Rather than force companies to continuously drain raw materials that are in dwindling supply, they can acquire the materials that they need from previously-used products.
